Chiropractic care

Hands-on care for back and neck pain with Dr. Justin Jwad, DC, in the same practice as our pain physicians, spine specialists and physical therapists.

What does chiropractic care at Specialty Medical Center involve?

A chiropractic visit starts with a history and exam. Treatment may include spinal manipulation or mobilization, soft-tissue work and home exercises, aimed at reducing pain and improving movement. Because our chiropractor works alongside physicians and physical therapists, you can be referred for imaging, a medical evaluation or therapy without starting over somewhere else.

Your chiropractor

Dr. Justin Jwad, DC earned his Doctor of Chiropractic and a Master of Science in Acupuncture at the National University of Health Sciences. He sees patients for back pain, neck pain and whiplash at our Dearborn office on Tuesdays and Thursdays and our Sterling Heights · Schoenherr Rd office on Fridays.

Treatments we offer

Our physical therapists also offer dry needling for muscle pain.

What it can help with

  • Low back pain, including recent flare-ups
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Neck and back pain after a car accident (chiropractic after a crash)
  • Some headaches that start in the neck

For low back pain, clinical guidelines list spinal manipulation among the non-drug options worth trying first, along with exercise and heat. Results vary, and most guidelines pair it with an active exercise program.

When to see a physician first

Chiropractic care isn't the right first step for every problem. See a physician, or go to urgent care or the emergency room, if you have:

  • Weakness, numbness or tingling that is getting worse
  • New trouble controlling your bladder or bowels, or numbness in the groin
  • Pain after a serious fall or crash, or pain with fever or unexplained weight loss
  • Known osteoporosis, a spinal fracture, or cancer

Our pain management physicians and spine specialists can evaluate these first, and refer you back for chiropractic care when it fits.

How to start

Chiropractic visits are scheduled by phone. Call (313) 572-0810, and tell us if you were hurt in a car accident or at work so we can check the claim before your visit. Bring your photo ID, insurance card and, after an accident, your claim number.

Common questions

Do I need a referral to see the chiropractor?

Many health plans don't require one, but some do, and car accident and work injury claims have their own rules. We check before your first visit.

Is chiropractic care covered by insurance?

Coverage depends on your plan. Many plans cover a set number of visits per year. Michigan no-fault coverage for chiropractic care has specific limits, so we review your auto claim first. See who usually pays.

Can I see the chiropractor and a physical therapist?

Yes. Chiropractic care and physical therapy are often combined, and both teams can share notes because they're in one practice.
