Spinal decompression therapy

Non-surgical, motorized traction for back and neck pain, offered as part of chiropractic care.

What is spinal decompression therapy?

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a form of motorized traction. You lie on a padded table while a harness gently stretches the low back or neck in controlled cycles. The aim is to ease pressure on discs and nerves and reduce pain. It is different from decompression surgery.

At Specialty Medical Center

Spinal decompression is part of our chiropractic care with Dr. Justin Jwad, DC, in Dearborn on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Sterling Heights · Schoenherr Rd on Fridays. Because our chiropractor works with our pain physicians and spine specialists, imaging and a medical evaluation are available when needed.

Who it may suit

  • Low back or neck pain from disc problems, such as a bulging or herniated disc
  • Sciatica or arm pain from a pinched nerve, after a medical check

What the evidence shows

Research on traction for low back pain shows small or uncertain benefit on its own. Many patients use it alongside exercise, manual care and other treatment. We'll tell you plainly if another option fits you better.

Who shouldn't have it

  • Spinal fracture, tumor, infection, or severe osteoporosis
  • Spinal fusion or hardware in the area being treated
  • Pregnancy
  • Worsening weakness or numbness, or new bladder or bowel problems: see a physician the same day

What a session is like

Sessions usually take 20 to 30 minutes, and you stay clothed. You should feel a gentle stretch, not pain. A course of several sessions is typical, and we check progress as you go.

How to start

Call (313) 572-0810. Bring any MRI or X-ray reports you already have.
