The Specialty Experience

Rehabilitation, pain management, regenerative medicine, minimally invasive spine, neurosurgery and orthopedics working as one team, so you get one plan instead of a string of referrals, with the most conservative care first.

What is the Specialty Experience?

It's how Specialty Medical Center cares for spine, joint and nerve pain: specialists from several fields work from the same offices and the same record, so your evaluation, diagnostic tests, procedures and rehab are planned together and the least invasive option that can work comes first.

One team, from conservative care to surgery

We start with the least invasive care that can work and move to the next step only when it's needed.

Our approach: the least invasive care that can work, first
  1. 1Conservative carePhysical therapy, chiropractic, occupational and hand therapy
  2. 2Interventional painDiagnostic injections, nerve blocks and ablation
  3. 3Regenerative medicineShockwave, PRP and bone marrow concentrate
  4. 4Minimally invasiveSmall-incision spine and joint procedures
  5. 5NeuromodulationSpinal cord and nerve stimulators
  6. 6SurgerySpine and orthopedic surgery when it's the better option
  1. Conservative care Physical therapy, chiropractic care, spinal decompression, occupational and hand therapy, dry needling.
  2. Interventional pain management Diagnostic injections, nerve blocks and ablations that find and treat the pain source.
  3. Regenerative medicine Different signals for pain relief and healing: shockwave and laser, high-dose PRP, Gen III Biologics (EXOCUBE), bone marrow concentrate and microfragmented fat; procedures are generally done at Universal Care Surgery Center.
  4. Minimally invasive spine Longer-lasting relief without major spine surgery.
  5. Neuromodulation Stimulators for pain that persists after surgery or when surgery isn't an option.
  6. Spine surgery Spinal fusion, disc replacement and laminectomy for disc herniations, radiculopathy, spinal stenosis and instability, with Michigan Spine Specialists.
  7. Orthopedic surgery For joints that haven't improved with conservative and interventional care, and fractures: arthroscopic ligament, meniscus, labrum and tendon repair, and hip, knee and shoulder replacement.

Walk-in urgent care with CT and X-ray is available in Dearborn.

The regenerative program, step by step

Within the Specialty Experience, regenerative care also runs from simplest to most involved, and your physician recommends where to start:

  1. Energy-based therapies: light and pressure waves
  2. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP): platelet growth factors
  3. Gen III Biologics with EXOCUBE: concentrated platelet and plasma proteins
  4. Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC): your own marrow cells and proteins
  5. Microfragmented fat (MFAT): your own fat tissue, minimally processed

How it works

  1. One intake. Book online or call (313) 572-0810. Our team checks your insurance, or your no-fault or workers' comp claim, before the visit and can request your outside records and imaging.
  2. Find the pain source. A physician reviews your history, exam and imaging. Diagnostic injections often confirm where the pain comes from before anything bigger is considered.
  3. A plan in steps. Conservative care first, then interventional pain treatment and regenerative medicine, then minimally invasive procedures and stimulators; surgery only when it's the better option.
  4. The right setting for each procedure. Procedures are done at Universal Care Surgery Center, Advanced Surgery Center or Garden City Hospital, depending on the procedure and your physician.
  5. Same team after the procedure. Follow-up visits and rehab with our therapists, coordinated with the physician who treated you.

Who it's for

  • Back, neck or nerve pain that hasn't improved with treatment elsewhere
  • People told they need major spine surgery who want to know every option first
