What is trigger finger?
Trigger finger happens when a finger tendon catches as it slides through its tunnel, causing pain at the base of the finger, clicking, or a finger that locks bent.
Common signs
- Clicking or catching when bending a finger
- A finger stuck bent that has to be pushed straight
- Pain at the base of the finger or thumb
How it's evaluated and treated
Treatment starts with rest, a splint and hand therapy; a steroid injection often helps. If it returns, a percutaneous release frees the tendon through a needle.
Recovery and outlook
Most people regain smooth motion after treatment.
When to get help now
See a doctor promptly for a hot, red, swollen finger.
