What is minimally invasive laminotomy?
A laminotomy removes a small part of the lamina, the bony arch at the back of a vertebra, to make room for pinched nerves. Done through a small incision with a tube or endoscope, it relieves pressure while leaving most of the spine's structure in place.
Who it may help
- Spinal stenosis with leg pain or numbness when walking or standing
- A pinched nerve that hasn't improved with therapy and injections
What happens
Under anesthesia, a small tube is placed through a short incision, and bone and ligament pressing on the nerve are removed under magnification.
Recovery and outlook
Many people go home the same day or the next. Walking starts right away; lifting limits apply for several weeks.
Risks
Infection, bleeding, a spinal fluid leak, nerve injury, and the chance that symptoms return.

When a procedure is medically necessary, it is usually billed to health insurance, Michigan auto no-fault or workers' comp. Many plans need prior authorization.
