What is laminectomy?
A laminectomy removes the lamina, the back part of a vertebra, to make more room for the spinal cord and nerves. It's a common surgery for spinal stenosis that causes leg pain, numbness or weakness, especially with walking.
Who it may help
- Spinal stenosis with leg pain, numbness or weakness
- Symptoms that limit walking despite therapy and injections
What happens
Under general anesthesia, the surgeon removes bone and thickened ligament over the nerves. Fusion is added only if the spine needs stabilizing. A smaller laminotomy may be possible.
Recovery and outlook
Many people walk the same day and go home within one or two days, followed by physical therapy.
Risks
Infection, bleeding, spinal fluid leak, nerve injury, and instability.
