What is vertebrogenic pain?
Vertebrogenic pain is chronic low back pain that comes from damage to the vertebral endplates, the top and bottom surfaces of the vertebrae. The pain signals travel through the basivertebral nerve. It often shows on MRI as Modic changes.
Common signs
- Chronic mid-line low back pain
- Pain worse with sitting, bending or activity
- Modic changes on MRI
How it's evaluated and treated
An MRI review looks for endplate (Modic) changes. When they're present and conservative care hasn't helped, basivertebral nerve ablation is an option.
Recovery and outlook
Relief after ablation often lasts years in published studies, though results vary.
When to get help now
See a doctor for back pain with fever, weight loss or new weakness.
