What are trigger point injections?
Trigger points are tight, tender knots in a muscle that can cause local pain or pain that spreads. A trigger point injection places a small amount of numbing medicine, sometimes with a steroid, into the knot to relax it and ease pain, so stretching and therapy work better.
Who it may help
- Neck, shoulder and upper-back muscle pain
- Low back muscle pain
- Muscle pain after a car accident or work strain
- Headaches linked to tight neck muscles
What happens
The provider finds the knot by touch and injects through a thin needle. Several points can be treated in one short visit.
Recovery and outlook
Soreness for a day or two is common. Gentle stretching and activity are encouraged.
Risks
Soreness, bruising, and rarely infection or, with chest-wall injections, a collapsed lung.
