What is spinal instability?

Spinal instability means vertebrae move more than they should, sometimes slipping forward (spondylolisthesis). It can cause back pain and, if nerves are pinched, leg pain, numbness or weakness.

Who it may help

  • Back pain that worsens with standing or activity
  • Leg pain, numbness or weakness from pinched nerves
  • Slippage or abnormal motion seen on X-rays taken while bending

What happens

Evaluation includes an exam and X-rays, often with bending views, and sometimes MRI. Care usually starts with physical therapy and pain management; spinal fusion is considered when symptoms persist or nerves are affected.

Recovery and outlook

Many people improve with therapy and activity changes. Recovery after fusion takes months.

Risks

Get care right away for new weakness, numbness in the groin area, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
