What are spinal compression fractures?
A compression fracture is a collapse of a vertebra, most often from osteoporosis, sometimes after a minor fall or even a cough. It can cause sudden back pain, loss of height or a stooped posture.
Common signs
- Sudden back pain in someone with osteoporosis
- Back pain after a fall
- Loss of height or a stooped posture
How it's evaluated and treated
Imaging confirms the fracture. Treatment includes pain control, bracing and activity changes; kyphoplasty can stabilize painful fractures. Bone health testing and treatment help prevent the next one.
Recovery and outlook
