Shoulder replacement

Orthopedic surgery at Specialty Medical Center.

Person holding a sore shoulder

What is shoulder replacement?

Shoulder replacement replaces the damaged ball and socket of the shoulder. In a reverse replacement, the ball and socket switch places, which can help when the rotator cuff is badly torn. It's considered when arthritis or joint damage keeps causing pain and weakness after other treatment.

Who it may help

  • Advanced shoulder arthritis
  • A large rotator cuff tear with arthritis (reverse replacement)
  • Pain and weakness that persist after therapy, medicines and injections

What happens

Under anesthesia, the damaged surfaces are replaced with implants. Your surgeon explains whether an anatomic or reverse replacement fits you.

Recovery and outlook

A sling for a few weeks, then a guided physical therapy program; strength and motion improve over months.

Risks

Infection, dislocation, stiffness, nerve injury, fracture, and implant loosening over time.

Cost and coverage

When a procedure is medically necessary, it is usually billed to health insurance, Michigan auto no-fault or workers' comp. Many plans need prior authorization. Our team checks your benefits before your procedure is scheduled and tells you about any cost you're likely to owe. See who usually pays · Ask us to check your coverage
