What is revision spine surgery?
Revision spine surgery treats problems after an earlier spine operation, such as a fusion that didn't heal, hardware problems, a new herniation, or stenosis at a nearby level. A careful evaluation comes first, because many people do well with non-surgical care or a spinal cord stimulator instead.
Who it may help
- Persistent or new pain after spine surgery
- A fusion that hasn't healed
- Problems at levels next to a prior fusion
What happens
Imaging and sometimes diagnostic injections find the cause. If surgery is needed, the plan depends on what failed.
Recovery and outlook
Recovery varies with the procedure and is usually longer than after a first surgery.
Risks
Higher rates of infection, spinal fluid leak and nerve injury than first-time surgery.

When a procedure is medically necessary, it is usually billed to health insurance, Michigan auto no-fault or workers' comp. Many plans need prior authorization.
