What is multifidus dysfunction?
The multifidus is a deep back muscle that stabilizes the spine. In chronic low back pain it can lose control and shrink (atrophy), which can keep pain going. Restoring its function is the aim of targeted exercise and, for some people, restorative neurostimulation.
Common signs
- Chronic mechanical low back pain
- Fatty change or shrinkage of the multifidus on MRI
How it's evaluated and treated
Assessment includes an exam and MRI review. Treatment starts with targeted physical therapy; ReActiv8 may help when therapy hasn't.
Recovery and outlook
Improvement builds over months.
When to get help now
See a doctor for back pain with fever, weight loss or new weakness.
