What are headaches?
Many long-lasting headaches have a neck or nerve component, such as cervicogenic headaches from the neck joints or occipital neuralgia from the nerves at the back of the head. Our pain physicians evaluate these and treat with therapy, nerve blocks and other options.
Common signs
- Headaches that start at the back of the head or neck
- Headaches after whiplash
- Occipital neuralgia
How it's evaluated and treated
Evaluation includes your history and an exam; imaging when needed. Treatment can include physical therapy, occipital or medial branch nerve blocks, and radiofrequency ablation for neck-joint headaches.
Recovery and outlook
Many people get fewer or milder headaches with a combined plan.
When to get help now
