Tests we do
| Test | When it's used |
|---|---|
| Pre-employment | Before a new hire starts. DOT employers must have a negative drug test before a driver does safety-sensitive work. |
| Random | Unannounced tests from an employer's random pool. |
| Post-accident | After a qualifying crash. DOT rules set time limits: alcohol within 8 hours, drugs within 32 hours. |
| Reasonable suspicion | When a trained supervisor observes signs of use. |
| Return-to-duty and follow-up | After a violation, as set by a substance abuse professional. |
What a DOT drug test checks
The DOT panel tests for marijuana, cocaine, PCP, amphetamines and methamphetamine (including MDMA), and opioids, including codeine, morphine, heroin, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxycodone and oxymorphone. Non-DOT tests follow the panel your employer chooses.
Breath alcohol testing
A breath test screens for alcohol. Under DOT rules, a screening result of 0.02 or higher is confirmed with a second test after a short wait. A confirmed 0.04 or higher removes a driver from safety-sensitive work.
What happens to your sample
We collect your urine sample under a chain-of-custody form and send it to a certified lab. A medical review officer, a physician, reviews lab results and contacts you about any non-negative result before reporting to your employer. Verified results are reported to your employer.

Questions to ask any clinic when comparing prices:
- Is the visit fee the same for every reason, or does it depend on what I need?
- Are X-rays, CT, lab tests or a strep or flu test billed separately?
- Are stitches, splints or other minor procedures extra?
- What if I need a follow-up visit or a work note?
- Will I get the price in writing before I’m seen?
