What is biacuplasty?

Biacuplasty is a minimally invasive treatment for back pain that comes from a disc (discogenic pain). Two water-cooled probes are placed in the disc and heat the nerve fibers in its outer wall, aiming to reduce the pain signals from that disc.

Who it may help

  • Low back pain traced to a specific disc, often confirmed with discography
  • Disc height largely preserved
  • Not enough relief from conservative care

What happens

Under light sedation, two needles are guided into the disc with X-ray, and the probes deliver heat for several minutes.

Recovery and outlook

You go home the same day. A brace and limits on bending and lifting are common for several weeks, and relief builds over weeks to months.

Risks

Temporary increase in pain, and rarely disc infection or nerve injury.

Cost and coverage

When a procedure is medically necessary, it is usually billed to health insurance, Michigan auto no-fault or workers' comp. Many plans need prior authorization. Our team checks your benefits before your procedure is scheduled and tells you about any cost you're likely to owe. See who usually pays · Ask us to check your coverage
