What is artificial disc replacement?
Artificial disc replacement removes a damaged disc and replaces it with an implant designed to keep motion at that level, as an alternative to fusion in selected patients.
Who it may help
- Neck disc problems causing arm pain or weakness
- Selected low back disc problems
- Good bone quality and no major instability
What happens
Under general anesthesia, the disc is removed, usually through the front of the neck or abdomen, and the implant is placed.
Recovery and outlook
Neck disc replacement often means going home the same or next day; low back replacement usually means a short hospital stay.
Risks
Infection, bleeding, implant problems, and stiffness or bone formation that limits motion.
